Below The Belt

Sometimes these politicians are just plain dumb. I mean really dumb.

One RP solon with perhaps the biggest set of balls in recent history, Cagayan de Oro Representative Rufus Rodriguez, made it into the national newspapers’ columns saying that Oscar dela Hoya will “pulverize” Manny Pacquiao. If I remember correctly, this bastard was the instigator behind the “Pacquiao boxing licence cancellation” request to the Games and Amusements Board, in which the latter took quite seriously.

In return, Pacquiao made these comments:

Here are some quotes:

– Manny Pacquiao is simply laughing off what’s considered as a late, ill-advised and desperate attempt to have his Dec. 6 fight with Oscar dela Hoya in Las Vegas called off.

– “Are they crazy?” was Pacquiao’s immediate reaction, according to someone very close to him, to those calling for the cancellation of his boxing license.

– Pacquiao, now in the US gearing up for the highly anticipated match that could gross $100 million in earnings, couldn’t believe what’s going on. “Are they only after the publicity?” he reportedly asked.

Definitely a good analysis from Manny. This politician and whoever sides with this Sasquatch of a congressman are accurate textbook definitions of “crazy”.

I mean, this congressman, instead on doing his fucking job in passing laws or creating a better life for his constituents, attempts at a lame publicity stunt to at least land himself in a newspaper.

Flash news, Mr. Rodriguez – you’re a congressman, not a sportsman. If you consider yourself a boxing fan, please leave the talking to the boxers and keep your dirty hands to yourself. REAL boxing fans, like us, respect the boxers’ decisions and we would like to see a stellar fight between these two ring icons. REAL boxing fans don’t give a damn on price tags. The way I see it, this is only publicity for YOU, Mr. Rodriguez. You are blatantly disrespecting the sport of boxing by including politics, and you yourself lost your status as a REAL boxing fan. You also disrespect the boxers, which is downright below the belt given what you have done these past weeks.

And Eric Buhain, did you just blow this congressman? I mean, with all due respect, this congressman’s opinion is not something GAB should be taking seriously. Your board has tackled far worse issues in boxing in general than this horsecrap Mr. Rodriguez is saying. Please, Mr. Buhain, we want to see sports, not politics.

So Mr. Rodriguez, just slump to your couch and watch this boxing fight come December, because by looking at you, at least Manny, as a proud boxer representing this country, DOES HIS JOB. Do you, Mr. Rodriguez?

  1. Pacquiao is looking for a big pay check for his retirement. This is maybe the reason he chooses a more talented, strong, more finesse and talented fighter.Of course there’s the risk of getting beat to a pulp or worse fighting a man twice his size who’s also considered one of the greatest fighters in our era.Oscar can put Manny on his retirement home.

  2. Yep, your opinion has a point. But we also have to bear in mind that as sports observers we have to respect these athletes and their decisions. Manny wanted this fight, Oscar wanted this fight, and the only thing sure about this fight is that it’s going to be interesting.

Most observers have already predicted this fight going down since Manny “pulverized” David Diaz last June. I mean, Floyd Mayweather’s retired, Oscar’s retiring after this year, and currently the best way to get a retirement party is to beat the #1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Sadly, it’s Manny Pacquiao.

If Manny loses, so be it. If Manny wins, so be it. I’ll just enjoy the fight as a boxing fan, and may the best man win.
